The story begins in Miami, in the 20th century. Lestat tells the story of his pained mortal life. From the country side in France, his relationship with a mad musician and lover Nicolas. To his stage in Paris and  to the unavoidable vampiric gift, that is bestowed upon him by the crazed Magnus.
After receiving the dark gift, Lestat travels the world in search of his own dark immortality. The legendary Marius befriends him and rescues him from going into the earth (a period of vampiric 'hibernation'). Marius takes him to his secret hideout in the Mediterranean where he tells Lestat all that he knew including his greatest secret of Those Who Must Be Kept. Marius forces Lestat to move on to new territory, namely New Orleans.
In New Orleans Lestat meets Louis and what follows is told in Interview with the Vampire.
After Lestat goes into the ground in desparation, he is awakened by the noises of the new century. Radios, televisions, and the songs of the band Satan's Night Out enchant Lestat who is forced to rise and embrace the new century.
